Do you publish submitted articles or commentaries?
No, we do not publish unsolicited articles. We only publish commissioned pieces.

What topics do you cover?
We cover all areas of business within the four Atlantic provinces – everything from technology and business leadership to natural resources and petroleum development. But please note that we only publish stories specific to Atlantic Canadian businesses or business people.

How do I become a contributor?
If you are interested in writing for us, either for our website or magazines, you should submit a detailed story or column idea, along with samples of your published work, to our editor, Dawn Chafe (dchafe [at] atlanticbusinessmagazine [dot] com). It’s a good idea to review our editorial calendar (you’ll find it under our Advertising information) and submit story ideas applicable

What is your preferred editorial style?
Great business stories are not dry recitations of fact. They can and should be exciting reads. Our ideal stories are pithy and entertaining, exhibiting exceptional research and strong personality. Writers are expected to unravel topical issues and go beyond seminal facts to reveal new, and valued, information. Most importantly, they are expected to be master storytellers, gripping audience attention with their opening sentence and maintaining reader interest to the very last line. With that in mind, remember the basic elements of any story: gripping introduction, plot development through conflict, effective use of humour, climax, conclusion. Alternate points of view are a must in every story, and when used effectively they can advance the plotline. Writers have to create memorable characters, and merge them with the story’s necessary literary elements into a cohesive, direct, effective article. In short, you have to make the reader care about the subject, and make them want to continue reading. Do not overuse direct quotations, instead summarize the main points and use succinct quotes for dramatic emphasis.

What is the typical length for your stories?
The desired length for a feature in our magazines is between 1,000-1,200 words, however, a cover story is in the 3,500-4,000 word range. Columns and departments are approximately 700 words. Online material length is assigned on an individual case-by-case basis.

What do you pay?
Unless otherwise negotiated, we pay 40 cents per published word, for publication in the magazine and on our website. Website-only content will negotiated on a case-by-case basis, depending on the length of story and amount of research involved. Invoices will be paid within 30 days of publication.
