Club type: Moncton and St. John’s bulk up for new Costco locations

Moncton’s new Costco Wholesale opened its doors at 140 Granite Drive on November 16, 2018 to an onslaught of eager customers. The bakery was more than ready, producing enough bagels to make the trail up and down Magnetic Hill, twice.

St. John’s, Newfoundland is also gearing for a new Costco, departing their current location which they’ve had since opening in 1995. The new spot will be the largest Costco building in Canada with a warehouse size of 182,000 square feet, a larger food court with additional menus items like chicken wings and coffee grinders to set members off with fresh ground beans.

Ocean Supercluster receives super boost

The federal government’s $153-million commitment for the Atlantic region’s ocean supercluster was announced in November. It’s projected to provide 3,000 more jobs in Atlantic Canada and add $14 billion to the national economy over the next decade. The network of ocean-related companies and researchers are coming together to generate new ocean tech and promote innovation among startups. The federal funding will be matched by private investment.

Face the music

Canada’s first joint music and business degree has been announced for Memorial University in St. John’s. Students who complete the program in the expected five years will be awarded a dual bachelor of music (B.Mus.) and bachelor of business administration (BBA) facilitating the building of business foundations while carrying a tune. Deadline for applications for the upcoming academic year are set for January 2019.

New startup fund for francophone entrepreneurs

RDÉE Île-du-Prince-Édouard Inc., the Island’s chapter of the francophone development organization, has teamed up with Innovation P.E.I. to launch a new contest for entrepreneurs. The $25,000 Ignition Startup Fund will be awarded in March, 2019 to a French-speaking or bilingual entrepreneur in P.E.I. to help them launch a new business project or expand a new line of production. Eager entrepreneurs will undergo the training along with the judging process beginning in February, 2019.

Big Erics big move home

Restaurant supplier Big Erics is making a move into home retail. After more than 50 years of kitting out Atlantic Canadian restaurants with everything from industrial stoves to toilet paper, the company announced they will also be catering to the home chef. Big Erics At Home opened their showroom in Dartmouth at 171 John Savage Ave. in November carrying new product lines like Shun Japanese steel knives and sous vide machines.
